FMP | Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design Yearbook Tutor Meeting

Today, as a group, we had our first opportunity to meet up with Duncan Harrison, the head of Printed Texiles & Surface Pattern Design, to discuss the details and specific criteria of the brief, and refining the  outcomes and audience to produce for, as shown in the notes below.

-

NOTES

* Review brand guidelines and specifications.
* Solely PDF version required.
* Screen delivery - think outside... digital specifications.
* Specify function and marketing tool for students (promotion...but not a prospectus), annual record and keepsake catalogue, industry contact (then specify concept).
* Get Copy (Body) today from Duncan.
* Copy and content needed (Copy & Concept)
* Set up meeting to discuss concept.
* Sign off copy as accurate.
* Discuss how images will be collected.
* After Easter have text SORTED to be approved- each spread signed off by the individuals concerned.
* Deadline can be pushed back as it is a PDF; a degree of flexibility.
* By Easter get as much done as possible.

BRAND GUIDELINES (MARKETING)

* Extracted Leeds College of Art type - based logo. Centre/back- decent scale. Look at during design process.
* Name of college, course and graduation year need to be prominent on the first page.
* Body copy in Helvetica and a neutral, readable font. Scale for screen based delivery over a range of different scales and screen sizes.
* Neutral / suitable colour palette for both concept and the college.
* Colours need to be CMYK safe, print and screen safe.
* 210mm x 210mm or 420mm x 210mm spreads... consistency through publications and courses.
* MAKE IT INTERESTING...MAKE IT CREATIVE.
* 72 and 100dpi images (for screen)...work out size and resolution as well as measurements for PDF... DON'T resize in InDesign (this will make a HUGE file). Keep items scaled approximately.
* 5MB Max... Consider overall PDF (High Res & Low Res)
* x1 spread with college contact details for programme leader, etc.
* Consider both the course and wider overview of the college in the design outcome.
* Represent all students equally and fairly.
* Professional standard, same day (Photography)... Digital work can often be preferable.

DEADLINES

* Images by Easter (on, at least, identified to plan around).
* 29TH MAY OVERALL DEADLINE.
* 22nd April (w/c)... Working Proof (Sign off for content... Not necessarily the final design, but can all be approved as appropriate and correct - no more text or images from here).
* Final deadline for art work/sign off (marketing will proof read it, last typo check, member of Senior Management will approve it, etc.)
* IF DEADLINES THAT HAVE BEEN SET ARE NOT MET, WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO WITHDRAWN INDIVIDUALS FROM THE PROGRAMME.
* Deadlines have to be achievable and realistic (and workable) to our deadlines.
* Not particularly interested in the concept of having a page per person.
* SELL the course... why the course is so fantastic because...
* Want to publicise the course to it's best potential.
* Students shouldn't be bound by a particular style or image.
* Selling the experience of the course will sell them on to employees.

KEY FEATURES OF THE COURSE

* A "Tribe"... a family unit.
* Colour
* Visuals
* Drawing
* Engaged
* Studio Culture
* Very friendly
* Hard working
* Very good at what they do
* Want PDF to be interactive- hyperlink out to sites, websites, competitions, etc... be engaging and involving in the design industry
* Promote competitions and awards won
* Get industry and prospective students involved

NOTES

* 62 students on the course.
* Duncan is mostly free for contact and meetings on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes and after Uni hours (post 4PM).
* Relative freedom (PDF) over page numbers, but short and sweet would probably be far more exciting.
* Be explicit with details, and take responsibility for photography (ask Jessie?)
* Email: duncan.harrison@leeds-art.ac.uk
