Starting some initial research into editorial illustration and image - making, as a source of inspiration for building up a varied and diverse body of work and portfolio for the Geek Table Collective brief, which we will be starting to work upon within the next couple of weeks.
Coming from a background of image - making, illustration, and surface pattern design, I do still have a real interest in it, despite my work, now, generally, heading in more of a typographic and branding direction. From the image module, I had a lot of fun exploring various methods and techniques with image - based design, and various methods of delivery. One of the experiences that I found most interesting, being completely new to me, was editorial design, and responding directly to text or body copy through imagery.
As discussed, and documented in previous blog posts, one idea for generating designs for our exhibition is to generate words, phrases or themes about our time as graphic design students, and then pick them out of a hat between us. This way, we will each get something unique to work on, as a direct response to our idea generation, therefore, being somewhat similar to editorial design with quick turnaround times and responding to text.
Images sourced above and below are some of my favourite examples of editorial design, as found through Behance by various designers and illustrators of whom I admire.
Really looking forward to getting started soon.
