With an hour free this morning, I returned, after what feels like a long break, to the BA (Hons) Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design collaborative yearbook brief.
At this stage, having being designated roles, I felt a little distant from the project and getting involved in the design process and development, as I will be working on the editorial and layout, for which important decisions re the body copy and use of images has to be considered before I can make any immediate action.
However, we have all agreed to work on proposals and concepts for the cover design, having previously discussed the concept of working with squares (as featured heavily throughout the grid structure of the yearbook) in an 8 x 8 grid (62 squares representing the students, 1 for the Textiles Team, and 1 for us, the yearbook team). Keeping it quite simple, this morning I have looked at starting to consider colour palettes for the book, and how each student can have their own specific colour swatch.
As shown below, is some of the development and initial thinking for the design, and keeping it really simple. Towards the end of the term, Claudia Griffin, one of our design team members, was working on initial designs and placing type within each square, which I felt worked well and had a really bold, strong, visual effect, so at this point, emulated that style. For me, the colour palette was the main focus, and, I believe, says a lot about the character of the design.
I started experimenting with summer brights, but changing the tone of the swatches for a more pastel effect, which I think works really well in balance.
I've sent along this initial idea generation to the girls and am looking forward to hopefully getting some constructive feedback, and developing the designs in further detail very soon.
